5 ways to wellbeing

There are five key ways we can take care of our own mental health and wellbeing as part of our everyday life. Evidence suggests that being active, connecting, taking notice, learning and giving all contribute to good wellbeing and may help us to avoid mental health conditions in the longer term. Be Active

Being active is good for our bodies and our minds. Regular activity helps reduce stress and anxiety, boosts confidence, and improves energy levels. There are many free activities, indoor and outdoor, such as walking, cycling, gardening, yoga. It’s important to find something that you enjoy and that is suitable for your ability and any health conditions you might have.

Community Connectors can enable those aged 18 years and over living in Torfaen to find out what is going on locally and how to get involved in community activities. Connectors work with individuals, unpaid carers and organisations across Torfaen.

Take Notice

Paying more attention to the present moment, your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you, can help improve your mental wellbeing. Examples include sitting quietly to watch the clouds, paying attention to your breathing, or slowing down and really noticing the food you are eating. This approach is often called Mindfulness.

We suggest setting yourself a task that you will enjoy achieving • Taking on a new challenge to make or fix something • Rediscovering an old hobby that challenges you, whether it’s writing stories, cooking, sewing, gardening or playing board games

A smile and a friendly ‘hello’ doesn’t cost anything and makes people feel connected.
